There are two types of arthritis:
Osteoarthritis – this is the most common type of arthritis found in the feet and is caused by wear and tear and often associated with an injury.
Rheumatoid arthritis – this is inflammation of the joint, or joints, and is not typically localised to the foot.
Both types of arthritis are initially treated through a pain management programme consisting typically of anti-inflammatory and pain relief medication and supportive footwear. Alternative remedies may also provide relief from the symptoms.
However, if pain becomes so severe it effects your ability to comfortably undertake daily functions a relatively non-invasive treatment called an arthroscopy will be firstly considered. Other more complex surgical treatments may include joint fusion or replacement.
The aim of surgery is to provide relief from arthritic symptoms and return normal function wherever possible to the affected area.
